License and Certification Requirement

License:

  • Possession of a valid California Driver’s License and a good driving record.

Certifications:

  • Possession of a Basic POST Certificate.

Education and Experience

Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.

Experience:

  • One (1) year experience as a law enforcement officer.

Police Officer Recruit Applicants:

  • Recruit applicants require no prior law enforcement experience or possess less than two (2) years of work experience as a Law Enforcement Officer in the State of California;
  • Applications will be accepted on a provisional basis for applicants that are accepted, enrolled, or have completed the POST Basic Course with a California POST certified Police Academy within the last three (3) years;
  • Completion of thirty (30) semester units of college coursework from an accredited college or university in Law Enforcement or a related field (coursework from a California POST certified basic law enforcement Police Academy may be an equivalent or may suffice the completion of thirty (30) semester units of college coursework from an accredited college or university in Law Enforcement);
  • Verification of acceptance, enrollment, or completion of the POST Basic Course with a California POST certified Police Academy within the last three (3) years will be required with the Personal History Questionnaire from candidates who are successful with the oral examination and are selected to continue in the recruitment process.

Police Officer Lateral Applicants:

  • Lateral applicants possess a minimum of two (2) years of work experience as a Peace Officer (PC 830.1830.2) in the state of California;
  • Possess a current Basic, Intermediate, or Advanced POST certificate completed within the last three (3) years;
  • Completion of thirty (30) semester units of college coursework from an accredited college or University in Law Enforcement or a related field (coursework from a California POST certified basic law enforcement Police Academy may be an equivalent or may suffice the completion of thirty (30) semester units of college coursework from an accredited college or university in Law Enforcement).

PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Strength: Heavy work-lifting, carrying and/or pushing 100 pounds maximum with frequent lifting and/or carrying of objects weighing up to 50 pounds.

Vision: Corrected to 20/20 in one (1) eye, 20/30 in the other.

Hearing: Sufficient to communicate via radio.

Physical fitness: Sufficient to climb, crawl, sit or stand for prolonged periods of time; attends periodic evening meetings; travels within and out of City to attend meetings; incumbents are subject to mandatory overtime and shift rotation; and periodically required to train and qualify in the use of firearms, vehicles and specialized law enforcement practices and equipment.
